No Girl Scout Samoas From Next Year In Oregon And SW Washington As Bakers Switch

What goes great with thin mints? Samoas! But from next year even the cookie monster won’t find any samoas in Oregon.

The Oregon and South West Washington Girl Scouts organization emailed its members on Friday announcing that the council is switching cookie bakers in 2025. This will see Samoas dropping off the list of Girl Scout cookies in the region. But it’s not as bad as it sounds.

Oregon And South West Washington Girl Scouts Cookie Bakers

Baked by two bakers in the U.S.- ABC Bakers in South Dakota (a subsidiary of Interbake Foods) and Little Brownie Bakers in Kentucky (a subsidiary of Keebler ), Girl Scout cookies have been supplied to Oregon’s one Girl Scout council by Little Brownie Cookies. The company supplies many councils across the country, including the entire West Coast while the rest of the U.S. gets cookies from ABC.

Oregon and SW Washington Council CEO Shannon Evers said the decision to switch to ABC was made after a careful review of the council’s needs. She said the switch is a “strategic alignment and growth opportunity.”

Girl Scouts Samoas Name Change

What’s in a Girl Scout Cookie name? Although both bakeries make similar cookies, the cookies are not the same. For example, both make Thin Mints, but ABC’s Thin Mints are thinner and crunchier. But many of the other similar cookies have different names.

ABC makes Peanut Butter Patties, Shortbread, Peanut Butter Sandwich, and Caramel DeLites, while Little Brownie produces Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, and Samoas. Aside from Little Brownie’s whimsical names, the cookies are baked using different recipes.

The blog, Taste of Home, says the difference includes:

  • Caramel deLites have a higher cookie-to-caramel ratio milk, with a chocolate drizzle.
  • Samoas usually have more coconut and a chocolate coating resembling dark chocolate.
  • ABC Bakers has more vegan cookie options.

Despite the differences, including a different look and taste, samoas will be called “Caramel deLites” and Tag-a-longs will be “Peanut Butter Patties”. Thin Mints will still be called Thin Mints, but the taste and texture will change.

Evers emphasized that ABC Bakers will be a reliable partner.

If you love Samoas, there’s never been a better excuse not to say, “I’ll buy just one box.”
