Nicotine Pouches Will Be Taxed From September To Help Pay the Cost of Fighting Oregon Wildfires
Oregon nicotine pouch consumers will contribute to wildfire protection with taxes of an additional 65 cents on packs of 20 or less, and three cents on larger pouches, from the beginning of September.
House Bill 3940 passed the House of Representatives and the Senate and has been forwarded to Governor Tina Kotek for signature. The governor has thrown her support behind legislation that will tax nicotine products like Zyn and Rogue.
The new tax is expected to generate an additional $30 million towards fighting Oregon wildfires which are becoming increasingly devastating as climate change contributes to high summer heat and strong winds.
The legislation includes the allocation of about $32 million, or 20%, from the state’s reserve fund to combat wildfires.
