Medford Power Outage Traced to DUI Crash That Severed Utility Pole

MEDFORD, Ore. — The driver of a vehicle written off after colliding with a power pole in Medford during the early hours of Sunday morning was cited for DUI and other misdemeanors.

The accident, which caused a large power outage in the surrounding area after bringing down power lines, occurred on N. Oakdale Avenue and W. Main Street.

Two passengers were injured in the accident and were treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

After receiving medical care, the driver consented to a blood draw and was then cited for DUI, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, third-degree assault, and fourth-degree assault.

Tidings Insight
Oregon treats DUII testing under implied consent. DMV says driving in the state means a driver has agreed to a breath, blood, or urine test if an officer asks after an arrest.

The collision severed the power pole at its base, bringing down power lines. Pacific Power restored service.

Tidings Insight
When a pole comes down, crews first secure the scene because lines may still be energized. Pacific Power tells people to stay at least 35 feet away from any downed wire.

The vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by a towing company.
