Medford Inmate Attacks Lane County Jail Deputy With Mop Handle During Medication Rounds, Officials Say

According to a spokesperson from the Lane County Jail, the deputy attempted to subdue the inmate with pepper spray, which was ineffective, but finally managed to place him in handcuffs.

Supplying contraband covers banned items brought into jail or possessed while confined. Unlawful use of a weapon can also apply when an ordinary object, like a broken handle, is allegedly used as a dangerous weapon.

The deputy sustained injuries to his torso and arm.

The incident occurred on Thursday, and the inmate concerned has been identified as 62-year-old John Paul Lockhart of Medford.

Lockhart has been charged with second-degree attempted assault on a public safety officer, supplying contraband, and the unlawful use of a weapon.

Tidings Insight
In Oregon, an attempt charge means prosecutors say someone took a substantial step toward the crime. For a deputy on duty, that can support an officer assault count even before the case is proven.

He was already in custody for multiple warrants and crimes.
