Jackson County on Alert as Scenic Fire Races Through High Cascades Forest

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) warned yesterday that the Scenic Fire burning in Douglas County, east of Highway 230 along the Rogue River, was headed towards Jackson County.

The Scenic Fire on the High Cascades Ranger District near National Creek had covered approximately 83 acres yesterday, with 5% containment.

Crews established line and hose lays along the west flank of the fire overnight whilst the fire activity remained high. Spot fires flared up to a half mile east of the fire, mainly inside the perimeter of the central fire as it has progressed to the east.

Seventeen engines, four hand crews, three dozers, two falling modules, and multiple aircraft were among the resources on site on Tuesday, with orders for five additional hand crews, two Type 1 (heavy) Helicopters for bucket work, and two Scooper Planes. Yesterday, dozers worked to construct a line in challenging terrain with dense vegetation on very soft ground.

No evacuation orders have been issued. There are no houses in the area, but it is popular for outdoor recreation, including camping, fishing, and hiking.

The public was warned to avoid the area while fire crews are working, and travel delays along Hwy 230 were expected.
