Burglary Suspect Exits Church and Surrenders After Grants Pass Police Deploy K9 Team

GRANTS PASS, Ore. โ€” A burglary suspect surrendered yesterday after Grants Pass patrol officers, including Interim-Corporal Lexi Pittman and her K9 partner Kick, responded to reports of a burglary in progress at New Song Church and warned that the K9 would be entering the building.

Following 911 reports received at about 12:30 am, officers went to the church and established a perimeter before making K9 announcements.

Tidings Insight
K9 announcements are designed to win compliance before a dog is deployed. Here, the warning worked, and police say the suspect came out on his own.

The suspect, 40-year-old Michael Hood, chose to exit the building voluntarily. Hood was taken into custody and lodged at the Josephine County Jail. He faces charges of 2nd-degree burglary.

Tidings Context
In Oregon, second degree burglary means unlawfully entering or staying in a building with intent to commit a crime inside. It is a Class C felony.
