Salem Man Dies After Being Hit by Train; Police Investigate Why He Didn’t Move
SALEM, Ore. — Responding to a report from Union Pacific personnel who called to report a collision with a person on the railroad tracks in the area of McGilchrist ST and Pringle RD SE, Salem, at approximately 11:00 a.m. yesterday, the Salem Police Department confirmed that a 66-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.
According to police reports, a rail crew traveling southbound on the line reported a man walking on the tracks in front of the oncoming train.
Despite the train crew using various measures to get the man’s attention and stop the train, the collision could not be avoided as the man did not move for unknown reasons.
East and westbound traffic between McGilchrist Street and Mill Street SE was redirected as the streets were closed until the train was released from the scene at approximately 2:30 p.m. The name of the deceased is not being released pending notification to his family.
