In a special "Election Night" edition of The Editorial Page, the editors breakdown the 2006 elections, nationally and locally.
First up, the editor's discuss the biggest impacts of the election. Among the topics, the Democrats taking the House of Representatives back from the GOP led the way on this historic night of sweeping political change. Closer to home, moderates also faired much better than they had in the 2004 city council election and the 2005 school board election. While City Editor Myles Murphy said the shift is the development of a one party Repubicrat mess, Andrew Scot Bolsinger said the shift isn't a morphing of two but a new, powerful middle ground of people fed up with divisive politics, locally and nationally.
In Topic Two, the editors consider a city charter amendment that would change council elections. Among the ideas generating some interest this election season is doing away with designated races and replacing it with a straight election of all candidates, with the most vote getters earning the seats. The guys discuss their endorsements from this election and how a straight ballot would have changed them.
In the final topic of the night, the editors turned to the "Wild Card" section, talking about random topics that rose during the night. Votes on bond measures and levies suggest that even in free-spending Ashland, taxpayers may be reaching the point of fatigue.
