Ashland turned the ball over on an inbounds pass down a point with eight seconds left and its halfcourt buzzer-beater missed off the backboard as Roseburg pulled out a 61-58 nonleague boys basketball victory Wednesday in the season opener for both teams at Roseburg High School in Roseburg.

“It was a great high school basketball game,” Ashland coach Sam Osofsky said.

Junior guard KJ Pippa scored 19 points and senior guard Anthony Swanson 17 for the Grizzlies, who took a six-point lead in the first quarter before rallying from a seven-point deficit in the third.

Collin Warmouth led Roseburg with 23 points.

Girls Basketball

Ashland could not recover from a slow start against a taller Roseburg team, which prevailed 50-34 in a nonconference game at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Ashland (0-1) got outscored 13-2 in the opening period.

Sophomore guard Nina Munson led the Grizzlies with 10 points and Maya Elder-Hammond, a senior guard, added six points, six rebounds and three steals.
