Tristen Holmes scored 26 points and delivered a clutch full-court assist in the final seconds as No. 11 Southern Oregon beat No. 16 Oregon Tech 109-106 Tuesday in a nonleague game between Cascade Conference rivals at Mountain Avenue Gym.
Holmes, a junior point guard, hit two free throws with 28 seconds left to give the Raiders (2-2) a 105-99 lead, but a rebound follow, a 3-pointer by Mitchell Fink and an SOU turnover gave the Owls the ball back with 5.6 seconds left trailing 107-104.
Oregon Tech’s Zach Bernards scored an uncontested layup on the ensuing inbounds pass to make it a one-point game, but Holmes followed with his full-court heave to the wide open Ben DeSaulnier, whose layup accounted for the final score.
The Owls (3-3) did manage to get off a 30-foot heave that barely beat the buzzer, but the shot was heavily contested and missed badly.
DeSaulnier had 22 points, six assists and three steals, and Tate Hoffman 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Holmes, who also hit a key pull-up jumper to put SOU ahead 103-97 with about 50 seconds to go, added five rebounds and six assists.
Fink had 24 points, 10 assists and two steals to lead the Owls, while Tyler Hieb added 15 points and Andrew Weber 14.
