Thurston rode some pinpoint serving to a four-set victory over Ashland in Midwestern League volleyball action Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

The teams split the first two sets before the visiting Colts hit their stride en route to a 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 25-9 win.

“They’re a tough serving team and we just couldn’t get in a rhythm on offense,” Ashland coach Laura Morse said.

Sydney Philpott led the Grizzlies with four aces and 10 digs. Alex Crane added seven kills and four blocks, Emily DeVall five kills and eight digs and Grace Angermeier eight digs and 19 assists.

The loss dropped the Grizzlies to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in the MWL. Thurston improved to 5-7 and 3-3.

Morse credited Grizzlies middle blocker Alex Crane and defensive specialist Sydney Philpott with solid efforts for Ashland.

Girls Soccer

At Central Point, Mya Elder Hammond scored two goals and had three assists for Ashland in a 6-1 nonleague win over Crater on Tuesday.

Ashland (4-1-1) grabbed a 4-0 halftime lead.

Senior Olivia West scored the first of her two goals in the fourth minute to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead, and Ivy Amann tallied one minute later.

Hammond and West completed the first-half scoring. Ginny Cotton also had a goal for the Grizzlies.

Makiah Palmer scored for Crater (2-4) from about 12 yards out off a free kick from McKenna Gugliotta in the 51st minute.

Boys Soccer

At Roseburg, Jade Boucher and Joseph Holden each scored for Ashland to cut a 3-0 Roseburg lead to 3-2, but the Indians added an insurance goal late to clinch the 4-2 victory in nonleague action Tuesday.

Boucher scored on a free kick from 30 yards away, driving the ball into the upper left corner of the goal to get Ashland (5-1-1) on the board in the 68th minute.

Four minutes later, Holden scored from close range off an assist by Joseph Wallner-Sentle.

Roseburg improved to 3-4.

Girls Water Polo

At Cottage Grove, Zelia Harrison had seven goals, three assists and three steals, leading Ashland to a 16-0 win over Cottage Grove on Saturday.

Also for the Grizzlies, Fiona Johnson had three goals, two assists and four steals, Emma Kahn three assists and four steals and Lucy Gramley two goals and six assists.

Ashland's Sierra Pokrob had three goals and five steals and goalie Isabella Nicolier 10 blocks and two steals.
