Emily DeVall’s pinpoint serving helped the Ashland High volleyball team sweep Churchill in the Midwestern League opener for both teams Thursday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

DeVall, a junior outside hitter, served up four aces and led the Grizzlies on several long scoring runs, spearheading Ashland’s 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 victory.

Alex Crane added six kills, Sydney Philpott 13 digs and Lili Smith four kills for Ashland, which improved to 1-1 overall two days after dropping its season opener at Class 6A Roseburg.

“They were very excited,” Ashland coach Laura Morse said of the Grizzlies. “It’s awesome to win your home opener and they had a lot of fun tonight. One of our goals for this match was serving and we served tough as a team, but I thought (DeVall) stood out.”

Morse also praised Ashland’s front-row defense, specifically Crane and Rosie Dean.

“We did a good job stopping their hitters and had a handful of good blocks,” she said.

Ashland next hosts Crater on Tuesday.

At Turlock, Calif., Jenna Zuniga scored the only goal her team would need in the 28th minute and assisted on the door-slammer in the 76th as Stanislaus beat Southern Oregon 3-0 in nonleague action Thursday at Warrior Stadium.

The loss dropped the Raiders to 1-1, while the Warriors were playing their season opener.

Zuniga capitalized on a scramble in the box off an assist by Sadie Montague to give Stanislaus the lead.

The Warriors out-shot SOU 10-1 in the first half and 22-5 overall, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
