Ashland High School incoming sophomore EJ Holland won the gold medal in the 15-16 1,500-meter run and took silver in the 15-16 3,000 in the USA Track & Field Hershey Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, at Lawrence, Kansas.
Competing at Rock Chalk Park on the campus of the University of Kansas, Holland held off Stetson Moss to win the 1,500 in 4 minutes, 4.46 seconds on Sunday. Moss crossed the finish line in 4:05.70 to grab the silver and Gage Killewald snared the bronze in 4:09.19.
On Friday, Holland and Moss traded places in the 3,000, with Moss winning in 8:39.97 and Holland taking second in 8:40.05. Zane Jackson placed third in 9:10.97.
Holland made a big splash as a freshman at Ashland High last spring when he placed fifth in the 3,000 and ninth in the 1,500 in the OSAA Class 5A state meet. Less than two months later, Holland took second in the 41st annual Ashland Fourth of July Run.
About 10,000 athletes traveled to Lawrence for the Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships, for which athletes qualify by faring well at preliminary, association and regional levels of the 2017 USATF Junior Olympic Program. Competition takes place in six two-year age groups. Holland competed in the 15-16 age group.
