Ashland High School graduate Sam Gaviglio threw five shutout innings against the Chicago White Sox in his first career start for the Seattle Mariners, Thursday in Seattle.
The rookie right-hander, who graduated from AHS after leading the Grizzlies to their only baseball state championship in 2008, limited the White Sox to three hits while facing 20 batters. He had two strikeouts and one walk to lower his ERA to 1.29, and left the game with Seattle up 4-0.
The White Sox rallied to tie the game 4-4 in the eighth before Seattle's Guillermo Heredia drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth.
Ashland High seniors Peyton Fuller and Nick Sanderson earned first-team honors and senior Shea Scott was a second-team pick as the Midwestern League all-star baseball team was released Thursday.
In a vote by the league’s coaches, Fuller was recognized as one of three first-team pitchers and Sanderson as one of two first-team first basemen. Scott was a second-team infield pick.
Also for the Grizzlies, junior infielder Kellar Edwards and senior outfielder Jesse Carroll were honorable mentions.
Senior Jose Chavez of MWL co-champion Churchill was voted the league’s Player of the Year, his teammate Brock Townsend, another senior, was voted the Pitcher of the Year and Churchill coach Kenny Niles and Crater coach Jay Campbell were co-Coaches of the Year.
