Tzad Burt pitched Ashland out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and added a run-scoring single as Ashland beat St. Helens 5-3 in nonconference prep baseball action Friday at North Mountain Park.
The win was the Grizzlies’ second in as many days over the Lions, as Ashland also prevailed 2-0 Thursday.
In Friday’s game, Evan McLennan’s sacrifice fly to left-center scored Nick Sanderson from third to give the Grizzlies (5-1) the lead for good in the third, 2-1, and moments later Matt O’Donnel came home on Burt’s single.
Ashland tacked on two more runs on two hits and a pair of St. Helens errors in the fourth. The Lions (1-4) committed five errors in the game.
Sanderson got the starting nod and picked up the win after striking out seven and giving up a run on three hits for the Grizzlies.
Colton Beisley’s RBI single allowed St. Helens to cut Ashland’s lead to two runs with two outs in the sixth, but with the bases juiced Burt induced an inning-ending groundout by Garrett Sukan.
McLennan was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Grizzlies’ offense, which left 10 base-runners stranded.
Ashland next hosts Crater on Tuesday in the first game of a three-game Midwestern League series that will wrap up the following Saturday in Central Point.
