Ashland started the game cold and couldn't recover as South Albany pulled away for a 52-40 victory in an OSAA Class 5A boys basketball play-in game Tuesday at Albany.

The loss squelched the Grizzlies' hopes of advancing to the 16-team state playoffs. Instead, they ended up 8-17 after finishing sixth in the Midwestern League.

The Rebels (18-5), who placed third in the Mid-Willamette Conference, will host Putnam on Friday for a chance to advance to the final eight-team state tournament.

Senior center McKane Ellis scored nine points and senior guard Malik Pippa hit two 3-pointers and scored eight for the Grizzlies, who were held to six points and two field goals in the opening quarter.

Jake Costello scored 11 points and Jaden Guilford 10 for the Rebels, who led 28-18 at the half and 35-25 heading into the fourth.

The loss marked the end of high school basketball for eight Grizzly seniors.
