Springfield’s Cielo Gonzalez scored 21 points in the second quarter and finished with 43 as the Millers pulled away early on their way to a 77-32 rout in Midwestern League girls basketball action Friday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

The 5-foot-6 junior guard drained three 3-pointers, two conventional field goals and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the second quarter to help Springfield (5-7, 1-2 MWL) outscore Ashland 28-2 and stretch a five-point lead through one quarter into a 31-point spread at the half.

“It’s the life of having a young team,” Ashland coach Antione Perry said. “We’ll have great quarters and then we’ll have a lot of turnovers. But for the most part we’re actually averaging less turnovers than we did with last year’s team. So from that standpoint we are a little better, but we do make a lot of mistakes all at once and that’s what’s really hurting us this year.”

Mya Elder-Hammond scored eight points and Mikayla Titus seven for the Grizzlies (3-8, 0-3), who host Eagle Point on Tuesday.

Elder-Hammond beat the first-quarter buzzer with a driving layup to pull the Grizzlies within five points, 15-10, but the Millers used a pressure defense to blow the game open over the next eight minutes.

Springfield converted steals into easy layups as Ashland struggled to execute its offense, and the Grizzlies managed only two points on a pair of free throws in the quarter.

“We kind of crumbled to the pressure a little bit there in the second quarter instead of rising up,” Perry said. “And then in the second half we came out a little more relaxed. We got shots off and we hit some shots. We played a much better second half but they’re a great team with a great scorer.”
