From left to right, Serena Hoke, Elaine Sayre, Waller Hill, Lindsay Stempeck and class instructor sempai Alex Stephens participate in a demonstration during Ashland Karate Academy's adaptive special needs awards ceremony Friday at the Ashland Parks & Recreation building.

According to the academy's Michael Bailey, "This program is focused on helping those with developmental and physical impairments by teaching them confidence, focus, control of body and mind, self-reliance and worth, balance and coordination. All who have participated have improved tremendously. It is my goal to give my students a smile as big as their hearts through the power of karate and tradition."
