February 11, 1925 - October 29, 2017

Born Opal Irene Whitney February 11, 1925 and left all who loved her Sunday, October 29, 2017 to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in eternity. Her parents were Molly May and Albert Oscar Whitney of Coleridge, Nebraska. Irene was the ninth of 10 children. She has one remaining half-brother (of four half siblings), Bruce Whitney of North Carolina.

She was married and preceded in death by three husbands. She was blessed to have loved and been loved by James Bratton. She was the mother of four children, Michael Gorham, Chuck Thacker, Robin Reitz, and Sara McDonald. She had nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her son, Michael preceded her in death.

Irene's faith guided her life. She was always a devoted and active participant in her church. Much of her ministry was focused on the children whom she loved dearly. Her home was always open to all. Countless people shared meals and hospitality over the years. She was a living saint and was always there for others.

Her last position was as a secretary in the Fresno County Office of Education. In retirement, she was president of her homeowner's association, and worked with the youth groups at church.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Ashland. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to Ashland First Baptist Church, 2004 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR 97520, designated for Youth Scholarship Fund.
