Ashland Kiwanis is recognizing Julian Rice as its April 2018 Youth of the Month.

Julian Rice is a senior at Ashland High School. He is interested in math and science primarily, but his interests extend into many disciplines. He has been involved in many extracurricular activities at AHS and in the community, including math team, speech and debate, Brain Bowl, Rock Climbing Club and Ashland Youth Climate Action.

As a member of the math team, Julian has often placed in top positions at the Oregon Invitational Math Tournament. He has similarly qualified for state and regional tournaments in speech and debate and competitive rock climbing. As a member of Ashland Youth Climate Action, he helped to influence the Ashland City Council to pass one of the most stringent Climate Action Plans in the country. Julian is also very involved in music and is a self-taught guitar player.

While still undecided, Rice hopes to take his passion for math and science to one of the many top colleges in the nation that he has applied to, where he will explore studies such as computer science, advanced mathematics, engineering and physics.

Julian will receive a Kiwanis award certificate and $50 in cash by the club’s Chad Smith. In May, the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College scholarship will be awarded to two Youth of the Month recipients.
