The Polar Plunge allows individuals, organizations and businesses to support Special Olympics Oregon athletes by jumping into frigid Oregon waters. In Southern Oregon the event was held at the Jackson Aquatic Center in Medford on Saturday, Feb. 17.
Each participant raised a minimum of $50 for the opportunity of taking “the plunge.” The Ashland Kiwanis took part as an eight-member team, two from the club and six from the Ashland High School Key Club that it sponsors.
Ashland Kiwanis also challenged two other valley clubs, the Kiwanis Club of Medford and Table Rock Kiwanis Club in Central Point. The challenge was to see who could raise the most funds for Special Olympics. Ashland Kiwanis ended up donating $500. Medford had four members, who raised $605 in donations. Table Rock had one member who participated, with his club donating $220. In total, the three local Kiwanis clubs donated $1,325 to Special Olympics.
