The Ashland man who was found dead Monday on Hitt Road trail in Ashland was an experienced cyclist. He died from head trauma incurred during an accident, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.
John Edward Thomas, Jr., 66, was riding through a dip in the trail when he lost control and crashed, according to a press release. Thomas, who was wearing a helmet at the time, died from a head trauma incurred in a fall from his bicycle. He was said to be an experienced cyclist who was familiar with the trail.
A hiker found Thomas on the trail west of Ashland, approximately two miles south of Strawberry Lane, just before 1 p.m. Monday. The trail is a common thoroughfare for mountain bikers, sheriff’s deputies said.
Correction: Thomas was 66 years old, according to his wife.
