The Friends of the Ashland Public Library will hold its annual meeting and program from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, in the Ashland Library Gresham Room. This year’s theme is “Love Your Library.”

Following a brief business meeting, Dana Rensi will speak about her experience delivering solar-powered technology in Peru last summer. Rensi is a long-time Rogue Valley resident who graduated cum laude from Southern Oregon University. She has been the Educational Media Specialist at Ashland High School since 2013.

Rensi first became aware of the pressing educational needs in the Peruvian Amazon when she taught in the town of Iquitos as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher in 2005-2006. Her second Fulbright, a Distinguished Award in Teaching, was a virtual exchange for language learning in Guanajuato, Mexico, in 2011-2012.

Her training as a librarian, years as a teacher trainer in educational technology, and her classroom experience have inspired Rensi to focus on the educational needs of students in remote locations. The summer of 2017, Dana returned to the Peruvian Amazon, where she donated solar digital libraries to schools and libraries, donated and gave workshops on one-dollar microscopes called foldscopes, and shared information and donated menstrual kits to women.

The public is invited to the event. This year’s Friends and Business Partner of the Year will be announced, and there will be door prizes and refreshments.
