Call for Student Films: The Ashland Independent Film Festival is now accepting films made by young people, grades K through college undergraduates for the 2018 Film Festival. All film genres are accepted: animation, documentary, or narrative. Young people who live in Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine or Klamath counties in Oregon, or Del Norte or Siskiyou counties in California can submit films under 5 minutes for free to AAIF’s LAUNCH Student Film Competition. All film creators who submit a film will receive two tickets to the festival, April 12-16, 2018. Winning films are screened during the festival, and the filmmaker will receive cash prizes and a pass to all AIFF films and special events. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 5, 2018. Storm Large's Holiday Ordeal: Singer Storm Large rocketed onto the national music scene as a finalist on CBS' "Rock Star: Supernova" and has since performed with the New York Pops, Pink Martini, k.d. lang, Rufus Wainwright and others on stages that range from Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to a sold-out run of her autobiographical show, "Crazy Enough," at Portland Center Stage. 'The Concert for New Year’s Eve': This New Year's Eve concert — a tradition since 2001 — will feature music for flutes, classical guitar, voice, harp and piano played by some of the Rogue Valley's best-known musicians. Look for Alexander Tutunov, Joseph Yungen, Laurie Anne Hunter, Lisa Nichols, Sherril Wood, Lindsay Panero, Shelly Cox-Thornhill, Tamara Marston, John Stadelman and Wenjun Qi to perform works by composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, James MacMillan, Claude Debussy, Alexander Scriabin, Franz Doppler, Dave Brubeck, Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The concert will close with a sing-along of "Auld Lang Syne," and a reception will follow. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

First Day Hikes: For the seventh year in a row, certain Oregon state parks are offering free guided hikes on New Year's Day. In Southern Oregon, one-mile interpretive hikes are being held at TouVelle State Recreation Site and Valley of the Rogue State Park. The usual $5 parking fees will be waived Jan. 1.
