Friendship Force, an international organization based in Atlanta, Georgia, that links travelers with families in other countries, also supports Southern Oregon University students in their study abroad experiences, through $1,000 scholarships that have to date assisted 15 SOU students.
Friendship Force was established in 1977 by Wayne Smith with the support of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. It provides five- to seven-day stays in the homes of Friendship Force members in 70 countries.
Members of the Friendship Force of Southern Oregon have traveled to numerous countries, including the Ukraine, Morocco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, the United Kingdom and Turkey. Local members have hosted visitors from the Ukraine, Egypt, Turkey, Canada, New Zealand and various other American clubs.
Ten years ago, local Friendship Force members expanded the exchanges to include SOU students. Gwendolyn Bogard and Luke Yeates were the most recent recipients of the $1,000 stipend.
