Call for Student Films: The Ashland Independent Film Festival is accepting films made by young people, grades K through college undergraduates for the 2018 film festival. All film genres are accepted: animation, documentary or narrative. Young people who live in Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine or Klamath counties in Oregon, or Del Norte or Siskiyou counties in California can submit films shorter than 5 minutes for free to AAIF’s LAUNCH Student Film Competition. All film creators who submit a film will receive two tickets to the festival, April 12-16, 2018. Winning films are screened during the festival, and the filmmaker will receive cash prizes and a pass to all AIFF films and special events. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 5. Hula for the Holidays: Hula school Ka Pi’o O Ke Anuenue will present a holiday-themed hula show at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way, across from Lithia Park. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and a buffet of traditional Hawaiian food — pulled pork, lomilomi salmon, tofu poke, potato and macaroni salad, rice, green salad and haupia, a dessert made with coconut milk — will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. Aaron Ortega will play ukulele and sing Hawaiian songs. The show begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes holiday hulas such as "Christmas Luau, "Here Comes Santa in a Red Canoe," "Mele Kalikimaka" and "Hawaiian Santa," along with hulas to holiday standards such as "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland." The hula school's ukulele group will lead a sing-along of Christmas carols. Tickets are $10 for the show only, $17 for dinner and the show, and can be purchased at the door.
Gypsy Soul: Acoustic rock, folk and blues duo Cilette Swann and Roman Morykit, along with multi-instrumentalist Mikey Stevens, will present “A Gift Within The Song,” a program of innovative arrangements of traditional holiday songs, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland. Southern Oregon Repertory Singers: The choir, directed by Paul French, will present "The Snow Lay Deep on the Ground," a program of festive music to include works by a range of Renaissance, classic and contemporary composers, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, in the Music Recital Hall, 405 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. The program will include an appearance by North Medford High School's Chamber Choir and carols from around the world.
