Highway 66 is closed at milepost 12 for slide repair until Sept. 1, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced.

The route through the Greensprings to Klamath Falls was shut down Thursday so ODOT can repair a slide that reduced the highway to a single lane.

The $700,000 slide repair was planned for summer 2018 but a wet spring led to concerns the roadway may collapse sooner, pushing the project schedule up.

Travelers will be detoured to use Dead Indian Memorial Road and Hyatt Prairie Road.

“We know Oregon 66 is a lifeline for people living along the Greensprings and in Lincoln,” said ODOT District Manager Jerry Marmon. “However, the short-term inconvenience of a detour is far outweighed by the peace of mind that will come this winter knowing this repair project is the best solution to stop the highway from slipping down the mountain.”
