A grass fire ignited by a mower scorched 9 acres east of Interstate 5 Sunday afternoon.
Five agencies responded to the fire in the 400 Block of Pompadour Drive, reported at 12:45 p.m.
The fire sent up a large, black cloud of smoke that was visible throughout the south end of the Bear Creek drainage.
The first units from Jackson County Fire District No. 5 arrived at 12:56 p.m., with a second alarm bringing crews from Ashland Fire & Rescue, Medford Fire-Rescue, Applegate Fire and Oregon Department of Forestry. Three engines, six brush trucks, two water tenders and a bulldozer were deployed. The fire was controlled by 1:27 p.m., and mop-up concluded at 4:39 p.m.
Use of agriculture equipment is prohibited between 1 and 8 p.m. during fire season.
