Juneteenth Celebration: The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will commemorate the ending of slavery in America with spoken word, dance, music, hip hop, visual art and theater pieces at noon on Monday, June 19, on its outdoor Courtyard Stage on the OSF campus, 15 S. Pioneer St., Ashland. Juneteenth is the oldest-known commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Major-General Gordon Granger led his Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. The announcement came more than two years after Pres. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation officially abolished slavery. The event is free, but donations will be accepted for the Juneteenth Scholarship Fund. See osfashland.org.
