Special Olympics Oregon held its 2017 Regional Summer Games Athletics (track and field) competition at SOU Raider Stadium in Ashland on Saturday, June 3. This was the first time the event was held at this venue and it proved to be an ideal location.
There were more than 100 student athletes from SOU volunteering. There were 230 athletes participating from nine local programs, including Josephine, Klamath and Jackson counties. The Jackson County program was represented by 45 athletes and 17 volunteer coaches.
Ashland Kiwanis provided over 400 lunches for all athletes, coaches, and volunteers in attendance. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, bananas, cookies, condiments and bottles of water were served to each athlete, coach, and volunteer. The Ashland Lions Club provided its large grill and four members to do the grilling of burgers and hot dogs.
There is no cost to athletes for participation in Special Olympics Oregon. All funding for equipment, uniforms, practice facilities and travel costs to competitions are raised by volunteers.
Anyone who wants to volunteer and get involved can call the Jackson County program at 541-779-7120 or email email@example.com.
