Mushroom Collecting Hike: Local expert Nils Nelson will lead a guided hike to learn about edible and poisonous mushrooms and gather edible mushrooms on Sunday, May 28. Participants meet at 9 a.m. at the Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St., Ashland to carpool. The drive is approximately one hour each way. The cost is $20 per person. Participants must be ready for a day of off-trail walking. Wear layers, bring water, a lunch, a pocket knife and a cloth collecting bag. Library Fine Forgiveness: Library branches in Jackson County will forgive overdue fines and lost books in return for food donations during the month of June. Food for Fines allows anyone with an outstanding balance for overdue books or lost library items to have $5 in charges or costs forgiven for every can or package of non-perishable food donated to a local branch, with no limit on the amount that can be forgiven. Donated food must be in store-sealed cans, boxes or plastic containers within its expiration date. Customers who don't have fines or fees can be part of the program by making donations of non-perishable food items to any library branch in June. Food donations will be distributed locally.
