Xuan He Piano Recital

Piano, organ and harpsichord player Xuan He will perform music by Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Pachelbel, Liszt, Schumann and Mendelssohn at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, in the Music Recital Hall, 405 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. He studied with Alan Chow, Margaret Kemper and Stephen Alltop at Northwestern University in Illinois; Robert Satterlee and Vernon Wolcott at Bowling Green State University in Ohio; and Menno van Delft and Richard Egarr in Amsterdam. Squirrel Nut Zippers

The North Carolina jazz band will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the Rogue Theatre, 143 S.E. H St., Grants Pass. "Nut zippers" is a Southern term for a type of old bootleg moonshine. The band's name comes from a newspaper story about an intoxicated man who climbed a tree and refused to come down even after police arrived. The headline was "Squirrel Nut Zipper." 'Destiny of Desire'

In playwright Karen Zacarias' hilarious and provocative send-up, love and betrayal overflow amid a cast of Mexican telenovela characters. Two girls — one rich but sickly, one poor and healthy — are switched at birth by a scheming beauty queen. Chaos ensues later when they meet, become friends and fall for men they are forbidden to love. Jose Luis Valenzuela directs. The show runs through July 12 in the Angus Bowmer Theatre at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, 15 S. Pioneer St., Ashland. Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre

This Hispanic folk-dance troupe will celebrate its 20th gala performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Central Medford High School, 815 S. Oakdale Ave. The show will feature Seattle-based Ballet Folklorico Angeles de Mexico de Aurelia Ramos and will honor founder Victoria Snow Mountain, who is retiring after managing the troupe for 24 years, and instructor Juan Martinez, who passed away last fall. Founded as a small, after-school club, Ballet Folklorico flourished under Mountain's enthusiasm. Tamales and other refreshments will be available at intermission. Tickets are $15, $10 for students and seniors, $5 for ages 11 and younger, and can be purchased at the door.

Rogue Valley Chorale

Scottish and Irish folk artists Men of Worth will join the choir, directed by Laurie Anne Hunter, to present "Gifts of the Emerald Isle," a program of Celtic folk songs accompanied by traditional instruments such as octave mandolin, tenor banjo, concertina and bodhran. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford.
