The 2015 celebration of Ashland’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July will recognize two distinguished individuals as Grand Marshals, both with long standing ties to our community and our country. Each represent health and longevity at more than 90 years old.
This year the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration will recognize Dan Bulkley and Stan Smith, aka Mr. Raider. Dan epitomizes healthful living.
Now into his late 90s, Dan has been a long time community supporter of SOU, Mt. Ashland and various service organizations. He was one of the original "Snowmen" and was instrumental in starting Mt. Ashland. Meanwhile he served as a professor and a coach at Southern Oregon University, starting the track and field program and the current track is named in his honor. As an athlete, Mr. Bulkley holds age group world records in skiing, track and field and five Hall of Fame records acknowledging his career as an athlete and coach. Currently, he is still actively involved in the Nordic Club.
Stan Smith, aka Mr. Raider, is a veteran of the US Navy and a long time SOU athletics supporter. He is the oldest living member of the 1946 SOU football team — a team that went undefeated that year. He helped start the SOU Raider’s golf tournament that now serves as their largest fundraising effort each year. Mr. Raider earned his nickname because after all of these years he never misses an SOU home football game and is a valuable fan and supporter of the team.
Please help the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July Committee recognize these men for their efforts, accomplishments and helping the community remember to "Be Active, Live Healthy"!
It is Ashland Chamber of Commerce’s pleasure to bring this event to the community each year and celebrate Ashland’s civic pride. We look forward to seeing you on the Fourth! Remember to stay hydrated and bring your refillable water bottle to fill up at one of the water stations throughout the event. Please be mindful of leaving the parade route and park the way you found it to help keep Ashland beautiful.
Thank you to everyone in the community who attends this event and those who contribute their time and resources to make this celebration happen. We look forward to seeing you on the Fourth!
