Mr. Simonsen, 85, of Ashland, Ore. died July 30, 2014 at the Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.
Ivan was born August 28, 1928 in LaGrande, Oregon, the son of Iver and Myrtle Simonsen. He was raised in Elgin, Oregon where he graduated from high school. Ivan attended Boise Bible College in Boise, Idaho.
While attending college, Ivan met the former Dorothy Mae Savey. They were married May 7, 1949 in Boise.
Ivan and Dorothy moved to Payette, Idaho in 1951. Ivan worked for Norvell's Shoe Store for several years and later for Grief's Music Center. From 1962 to 1970 they owned and operated Simonsen's Stationery Store offering school and office supplies along with cards and gift items. They were active members of the First Baptist Church in Payette.
Mr. Simonsen took a position as the Payette County Coordinator for Senior Citizen Programs. That job led to his hiring in 1973 as Director of Senior Citizen programs for an eight county area in Idaho. He developed pilot programs for Senior Citizens in rural areas. During the 25 years he held that position, the Senior Citizen program in the area increased to include congregate meals, housing, local transportation services, and senior-owned buildings. Ivan retired in May of 1992.
In April of 1992 Ivan and Dorothy moved to Ashland, Oregon where Ivan began working with their son at Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home. Ivan managed the funeral home grounds, helped direct funeral services, and was the crematory operator. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby.
He was a member of the Ashland First Baptist Church and was active in the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Greeters Program. He and Dorothy enjoyed two trips to Norway to meet family and learn about his Norwegian roots.
Ivan is survived by two daughters, Bekki (Phil) Meador of Pocatello, Idaho and Judy (Eric) Simonsen-Cazier of Portland, Ore.; a son, Timothy (Kathy) Simonsen of Ashland, Ore.; a sister, Wynema Nikki Roseboro of Springfield, Ore.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 2013 and a sister, Wanda Coffman, in May of 2014.
