EUGENE — The Ashland girls tennis team captured the seven-team Midwestern League District Championship title and its top doubles squad cruised to victory in the finals at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club on Friday.
Hanna Greenberg and Vika O'Brien — the Grizzlies' top doubles pairing and the defending Class 5A state champions — routed Marist's Lauren Sibole and Madison Penn, 6-0, 6-0, in the championship match to remain undefeated on the year.
In the semifinals, Greenberg and O'Brien topped teammates Katy Barnard and Elana Cooper (Ashland's No. 2 team), 6-2, 6-0.
In singles action, Marist's top player Madisyn Bryant beat Ashland No. 4 Anne Kim, 7-5, 6-1, in the semifinals. Prior to the match, Bryant had not lost a game in the district tournament.
Churchill No. 3 Marilyn Walker got past Ashland No. 2 Ashley Knecht, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, in the other semifinal.
In the finals, Bryant downed Walker, 6-1, 6-0.
In the third-place match, Knecht defeated Kim, 6-0, 6-1.
Marist took second as a team.
Greenberg, O'Brien, Barnard, Cooper, Kim and Knecht will next play in the state tournament at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center May 16.
At Eugene, Grant Kahn beat teammate Mischa Kirby to claim third place in singles and Max Burt and Michael Montes teamed up to claim third in doubles as Ashland finished third in the Midwestern League championships at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club.
Marist and Churchill ended up tied for first with 30 points apiece, and Ashland was second with 26.
Kahn beat Kirby 6-0, 6-4 in the third-place singles match. In the third-place doubles match, Burt and Montes beat Aaron Kenny and Andrew Bennion of Churchill, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Neu Nipatasaj of Marist claimed the singles title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nathan Hampton of Churchill. In doubles, AJ Bartko and Austin Tyner of Marist toppled Chuck Taylor and Kurtis Bineham of Churchill, 6-3, 6-4.
