Food Projects throughout Jackson County will hold their bimonthly pickup Saturday morning, so members should have their green bags loaded with nonperishables and out on their front doorstep ready for pickup by 9 a.m.

Birthed in Ashland three years ago, the Food Project has since spread to Medford, Phoenix, Talent, Jacksonville, Eagle Point and Central Point, as well as Roseburg, Florence, Eugene, Portland, three cities in Washington, 10 in California and one in Georgia.

The concept is simple: Neighborhood coordinators distribute reusable green bags to their neighbors, who then buy one extra nonperishable item each week and store it in the bag. On the second Saturday of every other month, the volunteers pick up the bags of food and leave empty bags so neighbors can start saving food again.
