Donald James Mercer of Medford, Ore., passed away July 30, 2012, at Rogue Valley Medical Center. Don was born November 29, 1940, at Mare Island, Calif., to Lyle Mercer and Louise (Brooks) Mercer. He graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor of arts degree in social science. He was an active member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

In 1974, Don and two partners purchased the iconic restaurant, Omar's, in Ashland. Don spent the next 36 years involved with the day to day running of the business, making it one of the premier dining spots in Southern Oregon, known not only for its fine food, but its support of SOU and the Ashland Community.

When Don wasn't spending time with his family, he became quite the world traveler, looking for that out-of-the-way fishing spot. He was a voracious reader, he took great pains taking care of his garden, and he loved entertaining his friends and family.

Don is survived by his sister Mary Jane Mercer, Santa Fe, N. M.; his four children, Ben Bowen (Molly), Superior, Colo., Rose Bowen (Bryson), Central Point, Ore., Blaine Grace, Central Point, Ore., and Joe Mercer (Tiffany), Vancouver, Wash.; and his six grandchildren, whom he adored, Sophia, Lucy, Greyson, Kanai, Brooklyn and Aspen.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Don Mercer will be held at a later date.

A donation to the American Cancer Society in Don's memory would be appreciated by his family.
