Chateaulin restaurant, an East Main Street fixture in Ashland for nearly 40 years, has closed, perhaps temporarily.

Diners Wednesday at dinnertime were greeted with unset tables and a sign in the window that said owners had "decided to close their doors as of today."

The sign added, "hopefully there will be new and successful management in the near future."

Reached by phone, co-owner Patricia Volk said there is an ownership change "in the negotiating phase," and she is not sure how long the restaurant at 52 E. Main St. will be closed. She added that she did not post the sign on the door.

Volk said she could not comment further because negotiations were in progress. The adjacent Chateaulin Wine Shop also was closed and its phone disconnected.
