MEDFORD — Ashland's next pitching prodigy picked up his first victory on the mound for the Pilots and showed that he can swing a bat pretty good, too.
Steen Fredrickson, who will be a sophomore at Ashland High in the fall, pitched five solid innings in the opener and drove in seven RBIs on the day to lead the Pilots to an Area 4 sweep of South Medford on Monday at South Medford High School.
Ashland took the first game 9-5 behind Fredrickson's three-strikeout, one-walk outing, then steamrolled the Colts 18-5 as Fredrickson went 3-for-5 with two triples and five RBIs.
"We hit the ball fairly well today," Ashland head coach Josh Hamik said.
In the opener, the Pilots, who have won four in a row to improve to 11-5, scored six runs in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. Fredrickson's two-run double gave Ashland the lead for good, and reliever Tommy Hulick held South Medford to two runs on four hits over the last two innings to pick up the save.
Fredrickson struck out three and walked one while surrendering three runs on six hits.
Losing pitcher Joe Cooney struck out four and walked five for South while allowing eight runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
In Game 2, Ashland trailed South 3-2 entering the fifth before exploding for 16 runs over the last three innings to win going away. Fredrickson had a pair of two-run triples, catcher Vince Cammarota was 3-for-5 with six RBIs and Ryan Bottimore was 3-for-6 with three RBIs.
Cammarota's bases-clearing double in the fourth helped Ashland take control.
For South Medford, Justin James was 3-for-4 and A.J. Coffman 2-for-4 with an RBI. Colts starter Caleb Newman struck out two and walked three in five innings of work. He surrendered eight runs on eight hits.
Ashland next hosts Cascade Christian/St. Mary's on Thursday at North Mountain Park.
