After spotting a "real" piano in La Baguette Hardware Cafe, Thor Polson asked the owner for permission to use it.

The pianist, a student of Southern Oregon University music professor Alexander Tutunov, began performing there on weekends and eventually was joined by drummer Chris Matthews, who works at the bakery, and upright bassist Clem Novak, a regular at the bakery.

Polson, Matthews and Novak formed the Polmatnov Conspiracy, which plays at 10:30 a.m. every other Saturday at the bakery, 340 A St., Ashland. They'll be there this Saturday, June 9.

The trio's sets include songs from the Great American Songbook, including ones by George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, as well as jazz standards by Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Bill Evans.

The shows at La Baguette are free. Call 541-552-0878.
