The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has named Ian Wurfl student of the month for February. Wurfl is the son of Deborah Small and John Wurfl.

The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has named Ian Wurfl student of the month for February. Wurfl is the son of Deborah Small and John Wurfl.

Wurfl is maintaining a 3.989 GPA. For the past two years, he has been a member of the Mu Alpha Theta math honors society, and he has been on the Brain Bowl team for the past three years. He also tutored math for three years to younger math students.

Wurfl was also honored as a National Honors Society member for three years, and he was awarded Eagle Scout this year by Troop 112. Wurfl has been on the Model UN team all four years at AHS.

In addition to his academic studies, Ian has been highly involved in music. He undertook numerous roles as a member of the AHS band for four years. He has been a principal percussionist for three years with the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon, and he has been at a number of percussionist summer camps. Ian was also in the spring musical as a percussionist for "Pajama."

Academics aside, Ian has been an accomplished football player, as a wide receiver and kicker. He was honored in 2011 as a 1st team all-conference kicker.

He has also been a 2-year letterman in swimming, and a 3-year letterman on the track and field team.

Wurfl has applied to six colleges or universities, but has his sight set on USC.

A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year. Each student of the month receives an award certificate and $50 in cash. Two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored in May with a $1,000 college scholarship.
