Sadako passed away in Seattle, Wash., on February 17, 2012. Born in the Marshall Islands on December 11, 1944, her family, with three young children, came to the United States in 1974, then relocated from the Bay Area to Etna, Calif., in 1981. Sadako moved to Phoenix, Ore., in 1994 to study Theater Arts and Costume Design at Southern Oregon University, receiving her bachelor's degree in 1996. Along with fabulous creations, the friendships made and bonds formed over a 14 year career in the costume shop at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival made her employment a joy.
Sadako loved her family and friends, and we all loved her back. Being with her made us better people and her friendly spirit, magnetic personality, and wonderful smile lit up our lives. She is survived by partner, Vern Ohman; son, Steven Ysawa Moss; grandchildren, Makaio Steven Izawa Moss, and Alika Mitsuko Moss; daughter, Chloe Jane Moss, and her husband, Jason Denton; daughter, Rhea Medine Moss-Christian, and her husband, Christopher Christian; and mother, Janno May Korat.
Sadako faced difficult health challenges during her last 15 months, but she never let cancer define her or limit the simple enjoyment of life. She inspired and astonished us with her inner strength and attitude. This strong and beautiful woman will be deeply missed by all.
There will be memorial service for Sadako in Ashland, Ore., at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Carpenter Hall beginning at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, March 4, 2012. Remembrances in her name may be made to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
