Donald Patrick Murray, 79, passed away February 9, 2012, at his home in Ashland, Ore. Don was born to Percy "Pat" and Charlotte (Downs) Murray, in Yakima, Wash., on December 25, 1932, joining his sister, Nora, on a Christmas birthday. Don and Dianne Fagan met in May 1951, at a high school graduation party, and married in January 1953, in Seattle, Wash.
Don attended college at Seattle University and earned his bachelor of arts degree. He taught in the Kent School District, outside of Seattle, for 20 years. Don took sabbaticals during his teaching career to accept scholarships to earn a master's degree in counseling and guidance. Don was a practicing artist in painting and drawing, woodwork, sculpture, pottery and building homes. Don served three years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps Alaska Communications System. In 2011, Don celebrated 30 years of continuous sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous.
Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dianne; his sister, Nora Yeoman, of Ashland, Ore; his eight children, Elizabeth "Beth" Moreland, of Gig Harbor, Wash., Claire (Denny) McNeely, of Auburn, Wash., Russell, of Missoula, Mont., Christopher, of Seattle, Wash., Lynne (Bruce) Hamilton, of Bellingham, Wash., Laura (Darryl) NorDyke, of Sumner, Wash., Bernard "Ben" (Karen), of Federal Way, Wash., and Matthew (Christine), of Purdy, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A brother, Delmar, and a granddaughter, Roxanne, predeceased him.
A private interment service will be held at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A celebration of life potluck will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m., at Pioneer Hall, across from Lithia Park in Ashland, Ore.
