The 17-year-old Ashland High School senior and his father, Jeff Jones, form the duo Generation Jones. The pair plays its own brand of Celtic music at local pubs — including 4 Daughter's Irish Pub, Paddy Brannan's Irish Pub and The Playwright Public House — and for Sunday Celtic jams at The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant, as well as during community events.

Although they assumed their moniker only a year ago, the Joneses have been playing together since Julian was 6 years old.

At first, Julian Jones studied classical violin. However, his dad, who favors bluegrass, started introducing fiddle tunes to his repertoire and, later, Celtic tunes.

Generation Jones will put a Christmas spin on a primarily Celtic show at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at The Playwright, 258 A St., Ashland. (Julian Jones abides by Oregon Liquor Control Commission policy and always is out of bars and pubs by 9 p.m.)

Apart from the family duo, Jeff Jones, who plays mandolin and standard- and DADGAD-tuned guitars, also is part of the contemporary bluegrass Foxfire Trio and progressive bluegrass band Siskiyou Summit. Julian Jones plays acoustic fiddle with Generation Jones and five-string electric fiddle and guitar with his punk-rock band, The Tentacles.

The duo plays original arrangements of many classic rock favorites. Pink Floyd's "Breathe" at first sounds traditional before breaking off into a Celtic sequence of the traditional Irish tune "Kid on the Mountain."

Generation Jones also does Celtic remakes of Green Day's "Good Riddance" and The Who's "Baba O'Riley." For its Friday gig, Generation Jones will perform Celtic Christmas and Hannukah music, such as "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Feliz Navidad" and Jethro Tull's "A Christmas Song."

Last summer, father and son traveled to Ireland, where they played at pubs and did some busking along Grafton Street in Dublin, where they earned about 20 euros in a half-hour.

Julian Jones is set to study music and business at Southern Oregon University, beginning next fall.

There is no cover to the duo's show at The Playwright. Call 541-488-9128 or find Generation Jones on Facebook.
