Longtime Yreka, Calif., resident, Joseph Campbell Whitsett, passed away September 16, 2011, at Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka. He was 86 years old.
Joseph was born July 28, 1925, in Gold Beach, Ore., to Julian and Mabel Whitsett. He attended school in Gold Beach, and entered the U.S. Navy after graduating high school. In 1964, he married Marylyn Abrams. Joe owned and operated Crater Music Company in Medford, Ore. He and Marylyn moved to Warrington, Ore., and operated a 300 site RV park before moving back to Gold Beach, where they owned the Western Village Motel. In 1983, the family moved to Yreka where they have owned and operated the Waiiaka Trailer Haven. Joe was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1980, and a member of the Shriners.
Joe is survived by his wife, Marylyn; three children, Joseph Whitsett Jr., of Astoria, Ore., Jeff Whitsett, of Eugene, Ore., and Janice Whitsett, of Jervis, Ore.; two stepsons, Gary and David Kling, both of Saint Helens, Ore.; a brother, Jack Whitsett, of Coral Gables, Fla.; two sisters, Maryann Stewart, of Talent, Ore., and Myrtle Zollar, of Ashland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
