Stop slaughtering baby seals in Canada

May I share with your readers the following information from PETA about the yearly Canadian seal slaughter? Each spring hundreds of thousands of harp seals that migrate down the Canadian coast are beaten to death or shot for their pelts by fishermen.

Baby seals are routinely hooked in the eye, cheek or mouth to avoid damaging the fur. They then are dragged across the ice to be skinned, often while they are still conscious. Baby seals are forced to watch other seals being beaten to death, only to meet the same fate themselves.

The Humane Society of the United States also has much information about the Canadian seal slaughter at

The Canadian seal slaughter is cruel to animals and needs to be stopped. You can help by writing or calling the following people and asking them to please help stop the seal slaughter:

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Office of the Prime Minister, 80 Wellington St., Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2, Canada,

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, House of Commons, Parliament Buildings, Wellington St., Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6, Canada,

Rights are no longer the law of the land

In December 2010 I was stopped by the Sheriff's Department for failure to dim my lights for oncoming traffic. When asked for my license and proof of insurance, the officer found that I was driving with an expired Oregon license.

The charges now were failure to maintain lane and no operator's license. My vehicle was impounded, which cost me almost $500 to get back the next day, plus almost $500 in fines.

I cannot renew my license here in Oregon because of a 1978 DUI in Illinois. I have been in contact with Senator Merkley's office; they have been very helpful, but unable to really do anything; also, the DMV office in Salem has tried to help, but to no avail.

I cannot accept the fact that I now live in a country where the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is no longer the law of the land. I guess I am really wondering if this is just me that feels this way, or if I am right and law enforcement is wrong! Thank you for letting me vent!

Wyden and Merkley are on the people's side

Last week the overwhelming majority of the Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked an attempt to end billions of tax subsidies for big oil, the world's most profitable industry. In stark contrast, all but three Democratic senators voted to move S 940 forward.

This bill also would have closed a loophole which enables oil companies to disguise foreign royalty payments as taxes and reduce their domestic tax bill. All savings under the bill would have been applied to reducing federal budget deficits.

In the House of Representatives, the Republicans had earlier voted to block efforts to repeal tax subsidies for big oil at the same time they voted en masse to take away tax credits for small business health insurance. Exxon Mobil profits are up big time this year and yet pump prices remain high.

It doesn't take rocket science to figure out who supports Main Street and who favors the big corporations. Oregon Democrats Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley voted to support S 940. These men as usual leave no doubt that they're on the people's side.
