Carl J. Sandberg, 81, of Phoenix, Ore., passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at home. He was born August 28, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Signe and Henning Sandberg.

He served in the United States Navy for 22 years as an aviation administrator. Following military retirement, he worked for Erickson Air Crane, and later with the Ashland Public Library.

Carl was a member of the Ashland Christian Fellowship, and of the 55 Alive Group. He enjoyed reading, the men's Wednesday coffee klatch, and studying the Bible.

On October 8, 1983, in Ruch, Ore., he married Dorothy S. Sandberg.

Carl is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Ingrid Martin, and Florence Bitner; one son, George Sandberg; stepchildren, Bill, Carl, Craig, and Brent Owens; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Mirella Sandberg.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Ashland Christian Fellowship. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, at the Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home, in Ashland. The graveside service, with military honors, will be held at 9:00 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore.
