Jared Mees and The Grown Children's upcoming album, "Only Good Thoughts Can Stay," combines up-tempo, major-chord progressions with almost grim lyrics, resulting in an joyful yet introspective sound.

The Portland-based rock band performs at 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant and Bar, 35 N. Main St., Ashland. The new album, to be released Tuesday, May 10, explores the struggles for self-fulfillment as experienced by friends and family.

Led by guitarist and vocalist Mees, The Grown Children are vocalist and keyboardist Megan Spear, guitarist and trumpeter Javier Madrigal, bassist Quilty Kim and drummer Joe Bowden.

For "Good Thoughts," the band added elements of cello, viola, kettle drum and Hammond organ. Cover to the show at Alex's is $5.
