Donald Lee Orr

Donald Lee Orr, 82, of Medford, Ore., passed from this life to the next Life at his home with his family at his side, on April 29, 2011, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Don was born February 21, 1929, in Conrad, Montana, to Carl Lee Orr and Gertrude Gauld. He was proud of attending a one-room country school for his first six years, as the teacher there gave him his lifelong interest in reading. He then graduated from Valier High School in 1947. He received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at Montana State University. He met Alicia Shular there, who became his bride in 1952. They recently celebrated 58 years together.

He joined the Air Force as a second lieutenant and served in Korea. Soon after that he began work with International Business Machine in San Jose, Calif., where the work on the RAMAC Disc Drive was just in process. This interesting career kept him there for 33 years.

Don and Alicia were always active in environmental and peace concerns and were members of the Creative Initiative and Beyond War organizations, which were leaders in these areas.

Retirement brought them to the Rogue Valley and its many outdoor activities. Don liked to travel in the RV and trips included Alaska, a journey on the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Ocean, a family reunion in Big Bend Park on the Rio Grande, and a great trip through Canada to Nova Scotia. Family activities were important and time spent with the grandchildren was a special blessing for him. His love of photography has gifted his family with many photos to keep the good memories alive.

He was an active member of Medford First Christian Church and served on his church board and as an elder. He was known as "Grandpa Don" to the children of the pre-school where he was a volunteer. Don volunteered in the SMART READER program at local elementary schools, and often served as science fair judge at Jacksonville Elementary School. Don was active in the Crater Lake Kiwanis in the 1990's.

Don is survived by his wife, Alicia; his son, Bruce Orr, of Berkeley, Calif.; and his daughter, Cindy (husband, Steve Schubert), of Jacksonville, Ore.; his grandson, Nick Schubert (wife,

Julie) of Central Point, Ore.; a granddaughter, Devyn Orr, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two step-grandsons, Damien Schubert, of Medford, Ore., and Shawn Schubert, of Hayward, Calif.; and two step great-grandchildren, Blake Schubert, of Medford, Ore., and

Shaina Schubert, of Hayward, Calif. A son, Greg Orr; and his brother, Ralph, preceded Don in death. His sisters, Helen Gould, of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Beverly Hughes and spouse Glenn, of Cheyenne , Wyoming, survive, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Hematology/Oncology Center for their caring for Don. Also special thanks to the Providence Hospice nurses, Marcia and Leslie, and to Kathleen and Lorie from All Care Services.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 5, at the Medford First Christian Church, at 1900 Crater Lake Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Medford First

Christian Church or ACCESS would be appreciated.
