Ashland High sophomore Alexa Meletich picked up one of the Grizziles' 10 wins in a dual loss to Grants Pass in nonconference prep track and field action on Wednesday at Grants Pass.

The host Cavers won the boys meet 98-43 and the girls meet 90-51. Meletich took first in the discus with a 90-foot, 2-inch throw, her second-best heave of the season.

Also coming out on top for the AHS girls were: junior Aniela Klinefelter (400-meters, 1:06.10); junior Dana Greenblatt (1,500, 5:23.27); junior Nicole Shulters (shot put, 30-4 1/2); and junior Joy Harpham (high jump, 4-10).

The Jacksons, both juniors, came through again for the Ashland boys, with Sam winning the 400 in 53.56 and Benjamin taking the 800 in 2:06.24. Also for the AHS boys, senior Josh Franckowiak won the 1,500 (4:41.69), junior Logan Hartrick won the shot put (45-1) and the Grizzlies' 4x400 relay team (both Jacksons, Austin Chandler and Noah Yaconelli) prevailed in 3:39.48.

College Softball

This weekend's Cascade Conference softball games scheduled at Southern Oregon's University Field have been pushed back a day to avoid the bad weather that's expected Friday.

Southern Oregon will now host College of Idaho on Saturday and Eastern Oregon on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be played at University Field on the SOU campus.

Sunday's doubleheader with Eastern Oregon will be the annual Senior Day game for SOU.

Ashland won all four doubles while Grants Pass swept the singles slate in a 4-4 nonconference tie Tuesday at Grants Pass.

Slow-Pitch Softball

Ashland's Bear Creek Lock and Safe will host its annual slow-pitch softball tournament April 23-24 at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

The 24-team event will include throwing events with cash prizes.

Women's Soccer

Southern Oregon head soccer coach Jon Clement announced Wednesday that the SOU women's soccer team will host a free "Kicks For Japan" benefit clinic.

The clinic will be held Saturday at the SOU soccer field from 10 to 11:30 a.m. It is free to attend, but a donation to the International Red Cross to support the Japan recovery effort after the recent disaster is recommended. Details on how to do that will be provided on site.

The clinic is open to individuals from 7 to 12 years old and instruction and coaching will be done by the SOU coaches and players.
